Aerogel Yarn

Thermal, Heat Insulation and Light Weight

What is Aerogel?

Aerogels are a class of synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquidcomponent for the gel has been replaced with a gas, without significant collapse of the gel structurewhich result in a solid with extremely low density and extremely low thermal conductivity. After years’ efforts, Hikingtex succeed to get aerogel muster batch and produce aerogel yarn.

Product Principles

Aerogel achieves its exceptional thermal insulation through the combined suppression of heat transfer via convection, radiation, and conduction mechanisms:

Convection: When the pore diameters within the aerogel are smaller than approximately 70 nanometers, air molecules inside these pores become restricted, adhering closely to the pore walls rather than moving freely. This creates a quasi-vacuum environment within the material, effectively minimizing convective heat transfer.

Radiation: The material’s nanoporous structure coupled with its ultra-low bulk density results in an extremely high internal surface area—essentially an “infinite” number of pore walls. This “infinite heat shield” effect significantly attenuates thermal radiation, reducing radiative heat transfer to near the theoretical minimum.

Heat Conduction: Heat conduction within solids is limited by the extensive network of nanopores. Since heat can only travel along the solid framework, the nearly infinite length of the pore walls forces heat to take a highly tortuous path, drastically decreasing the conduction efficiency. This results in minimal solid-state heat transfer.

What is Aerogel

Thermal and Heat Insulation

Air itself is a poor thermal conductor, but it can still transfer heat by convection. However, inaerogel, the narrow space in the nanostructure hinders air molecules from moving freely andeffectively, and hence prevents convection of the air trapped inside , which enables aerogel to bean even better thermal insulator than air, its thermal conductivity is as low as 0.013W/m · K.

Aerogel Yarn Product Principles

Light Weight

Aerogels have a porous structure and contain a high percentage of air (>95%), this results in itsextremely low density (the lowest aerogel can be 0.16 mg/cm3)
